You might know me as a metalsmith, but my past artistic journey started with Ceramics,
but I left it behind in college with frustration of not being in control of the whole process.
I have returned to this creative outlet off and on over the years.
Recently, my local ceramic friends had a work session and the project was "ceramic masks". Ugh!
I wasn't interested but okay, it'll be something to do. By the end of that first mask, I was hooked.
It's an adventure to be able to unlock individual stories in faces.
Sometimes the story comes first and I am able to convey that in the piece.
Sometimes the piece tells me the story in the process and it's my job to bring it out.
Each expression, each accessory, each component relates to the telling of their story.
Emotions: stoic, fierce, at rest, joy, all there for the showing. Earth, animal, water, wind, these spirits emerge.
Each mask has an earring accessory, (of course!!).
What talisman baubles would this spirit choose to show their (vibe) inner energy, juju?

Genesis the beginning

Genesis,
My first, will always be dear. This one has a curious, but wary disposition and their subtle tattoos create an aura of power. The beautiful large copper feather earring adds to their confidence. It’s a bit Tribal, a bit Urban and a bit fierce.

Raven
Raven is stoic with a touch of melancholy,
perhaps ancient loss or longing.
Her tattoos, braid and jewelry have an indigenous tribe vibe, but she may just be an urban warrior.
She watches, and whispers a message.
If we listen carefully maybe we can hear her sage advice.
Afloat
Afloat
since Raven was stoic.... Afloat began as a smile, a sense of calm. Floating on her back in a quiet body of water, hair spread around her, curls gently bobbing in the current. She breathes in and out quietly, her smile increasing with her feelings of joy that I think she shares with us. |

Seer
The Seer is a work in process. Hoping to capture some age and experience in his face, which there is. I suspect he sees the future but is probably blind.
..I like that it's different but it upsets me. Maybe that's good. You don't know if you don't try.
He may change more.

Challenging myself to really release a larger range of expressions, I chose the joyful surprise of "Ooh"...( Or did it choose me?)
Sometimes there is the feeling of joyful surprise where our head just explodes.
She's always up for fun but her mask hides a bit of power..holding something back. She has funky found object earrings of bicycle innertube strips and bone beads.
or maybe it's just "girls just wanna have FU HUN"
